Things To Think About When Considering Deck Railing

Not all porches and decks have railings around them. This can be a good thing if you want an unobstructed view out into your yard or beyond. However, there are situations when having a deck rail would be in your best interest. There are many different types of railings and each one has its own benefits. If you are considering having a railing installed, there are a few things to consider before making a final decision on which type would be best.

Purpose

If you are looking to have railings installed to protect people or animals from accidentally stepping off the porch, you will want a different type of railing than if you want some privacy. Of course, if you are looking for something to add to the appearance of your home you may decide on something different.

Height

If you are putting up railings to keep small children or pets from wandering off the porch or deck, you will need to make sure it is tall enough to prevent them from climbing or jumping over it. However, if you just need something to prevent items from rolling off the porch, it doesn't have to be as high. If, on the other hand, you are looking to have some privacy on your deck, you should go with railings that will enclose the area.

Rail Direction

You can choose between rails that are vertical or horizontal. Vertical rails provide a better view and are generally less expensive because they do not require as much material. However, small children and pets can get stuck between vertical railings. Horizontal rails provide more privacy. However, it is easier for small children to climb horizontal railings.

Material

You can choose between wood, aluminum, vinyl, or wrought iron railings. The first thing you should consider is how it will match the rest of your house. Next, figure out if you want to be able to change the color of the rails in case you repaint the house. Another consideration is the amount of maintenance required for the material. If you are not sure you want the extra shores, go with a material that is easy to maintain.

Deck railing comes in a variety of colors and can be designed in a number of different shapes. Take the time to visit a store that specializes in decking and porches to see what is available and what can be done to customize it to suit your needs and wants.
